Vitamins & Micronutrients 50+
Stay active. Take proactive steps. Provide targeted support for your body.
As we age, our metabolism, body composition, and, to some extent, the absorption and utilization of certain nutrients change. At the same time, the demands placed on our bodies remain high: work, family, sports, travel, and an active daily life all require energy and performance.
A varied and balanced diet remains the most important foundation for good nutrient intake. However, especially after age 50, it’s worth paying close attention to specific vitamins and minerals.
Nutrients that may be particularly important as we age
Individual nutrient needs depend on various factors—including age, gender, diet, and physical activity. The body’s ability to absorb certain nutrients from food can also change.
Micronutrients perform numerous vital functions. Some of these are particularly important for people aged 50 and older:
Vitamin B12 is a good example of this: In older adults, the absorption of vitamin B12 from naturally occurring foods may be impaired. Among other factors, changes in the stomach lining and reduced stomach acid production can affect absorption. Vitamin B12 contributes to normal energy metabolism, the normal functioning of the nervous system, and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
Vitamin D also deserves attention. The body’s own production of vitamin D through the skin depends, among other things, on UVB exposure and decreases with age. The EFSA recommends an adequate intake of 15 µg of vitamin D per day for adults, with dietary intake being particularly important when the body’s own synthesis is low. Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal muscle function and normal bones.
Magnesium contributes to normal energy metabolism and normal muscle function.
Vitamin C supports the normal functioning of the immune system and helps protect cells from oxidative stress.
Zinc supports the normal functioning of the immune system and helps protect cells from oxidative stress.
Vitamin K plays an important role in normal bone mineralization. Among other things, vitamin K is involved in the activation of osteocalcin—a protein that plays a key role in bone metabolism. Scientific studies show that vitamin K2, in particular, can influence bone metabolism.
Vitamin K2 can therefore be a valuable component of a comprehensive nutritional regimen for bone health.
As a result, selected micronutrients can play an important role in meeting daily nutritional needs—especially when the diet does not provide sufficient amounts of certain nutrients.
50+ means: in the prime of life
Life after age 50 is full of variety. For many people, staying active, maintaining good health, and enjoying a high quality of life are top priorities. Sports and exercise are just as much a part of this as travel, social activities, and a mindful lifestyle.
An adequate intake of micronutrients is an integral part of a balanced diet and an active lifestyle. Which nutrients are actually needed in addition depends on an individual’s diet and lifestyle.
