Vitamin D3, also known as cholecalciferol, is the specific form of vitamin D that our skin produces from cholesterol when exposed to sunlight (UV-B). The activation of vitamin D3 occurs in the liver, while further processing to calcitriol occurs in the kidney.

Cholecalciferol, also known as colecalciferol or simply calciol, represents the most significant physiological variant of vitamin D in the human organism. As a precursor of active vitamin D, cholecalciferol plays an essential role in controlling calcium and phosphate balance.

As a single preparation, it is used for the prevention and therapy of vitamin D deficiencies. In combination with calcium, it is used to combat osteoporosis. In the body, cholecalciferol is converted into the active ingredient calcitriol.
