Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that is essential for the absorption of calcium and the normal functioning of the immune system. The main form of vitamin D in the human body is cholecalciferol, also known as vitamin D3. This is synthesized by the skin from cholesterol when exposed to UV-B radiation from the sun. After activation in the liver, further conversion to calcitriol occurs in the kidney.
Cholecalciferol is the precursor of active vitamin D, which plays a central role in regulating calcium and phosphate metabolism. It is used as a monopreparation for the prevention and treatment of vitamin D deficiency and in combination with calcium for the treatment of osteoporosis.
