Beta-carotene can be converted into vitamin A in the body. Vitamin A contributes to the maintenance of normal skin and normal vision.
Beta-carotene is a precursor to vitamin A - hence the name 'provitamin A'. Beta-carotene is converted into vitamin A by the body as required.
One of the most important carotenoids is beta-carotene, which acts as a bioactive precursor for vitamin A. This means that it is indirectly, but significantly, involved in embryonic development, visual function and cell differentiation of the endothelia. Beta-carotene itself is increasingly stored in the skin and in the cells of the retina, where it can act directly as an antioxidant against UV-induced free radicals.
